Silverfish

Silverfish

Silverfish also known as firebrats and bristletails are flat and have elongated bodies that are 1/3 to 3/4 inch long and broad near the head. Silverfish are fragile and wingless insects, covered in scales with and have two antennae on their head and three more long, antennae-like appendages at the rear of their bodies, hence the nick name bristletails.
Silverfish are a problem for property and building owners. Generally, they live inside buildings in damp dark places where there is ready access to the foods they enjoy. These foods include paper, glue, paper, books, photographs, clothing, cotton, linen, wheat, cereals and other such products.

Habitats:

Silverfish are tropical insects that easily adapt to the structural environment. They live in warm (71-90°), moist locations in the structures; hide during the day; and rest in tight cracks and crevices. They roam great distances looking for food, but once a food source is located, they remain close until the supply is exhausted. They can be found throughout a structure from the basement to individual floors to attics to shingles on the roof. Outdoors, they can be found in mulch, and under siding and roof shingles, particularly cedar shakes.

Signs Of A Silverfish Infestation

  • Their cast off skins from molting are visible
  • Holes in wallpaper, books and fabric
  • Silverfish may leave a yellowish stain on fabric
