Don’t Let Rats Invade Your Home

No one wants to think about rats in their garden or even their home. However, this year’s hot, dry summer has led to an explosion of vermin in neighborhoods as far north as British Columbia. Hot weather puts up fewer obstacles to rats, allowing them to survive and breed longer.

Ways to keep rats off of your property

Sharing your outdoor living space with rats is not very appetizing to most home owners. To prevent these pests from cozying up around your property, make sure to take the following steps:

1. Control your garbage. Make sure your garbage cans have lids and your compost pile contains only vegetable matter (no meat.) Even better, store your garbage cans in the garage until trash day.

2. Feed your pets indoors. Rats love a banquet of dry cat or dog food. Feed your pets indoors and keep the pet food out of the reach of vermin.

3. Get rid of the brush pile. Rats like to hide in wood piles and yard debris. If you need to have a brush pile, make sure it’s at least 10 feet from your house.

4. Set traps and bait. There are many DIY pest control products on the market. At the BugMaster DIY store, we carry the Trapper T Rex large rat trap and T1 Disposable Rat Bait. If you’re not sure what product is best for your situation, give us a call.
